Top 7 Weekend Getaways from Chandigarh by Taxi (with Fare Estimates)

Chandigarh is one of the best-positioned cities in North India for weekend travel. Within 6 hours you can reach a Mughal garden, a colonial hill station, a Himalayan backpacker village, or one of India's finest heritage forts. Here are seven that actually deliver.

Kasauli

Hill station · Colonial · Walking

Distance

~60 km

Drive time

~1.5 hrs

Best season

Oct–March

Sedan one-way

₹2,000–2,500

Kasauli is a British-era cantonment town perched at 1,800 m in the Shivalik hills — a 45-minute drive beyond Parwanoo. It is the most restrained of the Himachal hill stations: no towering hotels, no traffic jams, no souvenir malls. Just pine forests, vintage bungalows, and a pace that feels forgotten.

The Christ Church (1845) is Kasauli's centrepiece — the oldest Anglican church in the region, built in a Gothic style. Monkey Point is the highest spot in the Kasauli cantonment: a 2-km uphill walk with Chandigarh visible on clear days. The Lawrence School at Sanawar (adjacent to Kasauli) has one of the most beautiful campuses in India, though access inside is restricted.

Best suited for travellers who want hills without crowds. Weekdays in November–February are exceptionally peaceful.

2

Parwanoo

Ropeway · Orchards · Adventure

Distance

~35 km

Drive time

~1 hr

Best season

Oct–June

Sedan one-way

₹1,200–1,500

Parwanoo is the first town across the Punjab–Himachal border, and it punches above its 35 km distance. The Timber Trail ropeway — one of India's longest horizontal cable cars — carries you across a valley to a resort with mountain views that don't require a six-hour drive to earn.

The apple and plum orchards are walkable in season (April–September). An adventure park with zip-lining and nature trails operates through the year. Parwanoo makes an ideal half-day trip: leave Chandigarh at 9 AM, ropeway by 11 AM, orchards until 2 PM, back in Chandigarh by 4 PM.

It's the best entry-level option for first-time hill visitors from Chandigarh, and the lowest-fare destination on this list.

3

Morni Hills

Lakes · Trekking · Bird watching

Distance

~45 km

Drive time

~1.5 hrs

Best season

Feb–May, Sept–Nov

Sedan one-way

₹1,500–2,000

Morni Hills is Haryana's only hill station — a fact that earns it consistent underestimation. At 1,220 m, the Morni range stays cooler than the plains by 6–8°C through summer. Twin lakes (Tikkar Taal) sit at the centre of the hills; you can row a boat or walk the forested shoreline in near silence.

Trekking routes run to multiple peaks in the Morni range, none requiring technical gear. The area is excellent for bird watching — forest owlets, barbets, and various raptors have been recorded here. The Bhupani Eco-tourism Complex provides basic accommodation if you'd like to stay overnight.

Morni is best in the short shoulder seasons: February to May when the forests green up, and September to November when the air is clear after monsoon. July–August brings leeches on the trails.

4

Pinjore Gardens (Yadavindra Gardens)

Mughal garden · Heritage · Family

Distance

~25 km

Drive time

~40 min

Best season

Oct–March

Sedan one-way

₹900–1,200

The Yadavindra Gardens at Pinjore are a legitimate Mughal garden laid out by Nawab Fidai Khan — a student of the architect of the Taj Mahal — in the 17th century. Seven terraced lawns descend the hillside, each with fountains, flower beds, and shaded walkways. The garden was restored and maintained beautifully by the Punjab government.

Adjacent to the main garden is the Heritage Transport Museum, which houses one of India's best private collections of vintage cars, motorcycles, and aircraft. The museum alone is worth half a day. Entry fees are modest.

Best visited in October–March when the garden is in full bloom. A popular family destination — the lawns are spacious, the paths are paved and accessible, and there's no serious uphill walking. Pair with Kasauli for a full-day circuit.

5

Nalagarh

Fort stay · Heritage · History

Distance

~65 km

Drive time

~1.5 hrs

Best season

Oct–March

Sedan one-way

₹2,000–2,500

Nalagarh Fort dominates the Nalagarh Valley from a rocky hilltop — a 16th-century fort built by the Nalagarh dynasty, now converted into a heritage hotel. Even if you're not spending a night there, the approach road and the fort exterior are dramatic enough to justify the drive.

The heritage stay experience at Nalagarh Fort Hotel is one of the most underrated in the Chandigarh circuit: antique-furnished rooms, fort-wall views, candlelit corridors. Rates are reasonable compared to comparable properties in Rajasthan. Book a room, have dinner at the fort restaurant, and leave the next morning.

The drive through the lower Shivalik foothills via Baddi and Nalagarh is interesting in itself. The area is heavily industrialised near Baddi, then opens into farmland and hills approaching the fort.

6

Shimla

Queen of hills · Mall Road · Snow

Distance

~115 km

Drive time

~3.5 hrs

Best season

Oct–June

Sedan one-way

₹4,500–5,500

Shimla needs no introduction, but it does need honest expectations. The Mall Road experience — coffee, Tibetan food stalls, wooden souvenir shops — is genuinely enjoyable. Christ Church is lovely. Jakhu Temple is a 2-km uphill walk with monkeys and a city view that justifies the climb.

The toy train experience (Kalka–Shimla UNESCO Heritage Railway) adds 5 hours each way if you board at Kalka. Many visitors take the taxi to Shimla and the toy train back — it's slow but genuinely scenic through 103 tunnels. Book the train seat online the night before.

For a weekend trip: leave Chandigarh on Friday evening (arrive Shimla around 8 PM), spend Saturday on the Mall, Jakhu, and Chadwick Falls, Sunday morning at Kufri (15 km from Shimla), leave Shimla by 2 PM, and be back in Chandigarh by 6 PM. An SUV is recommended for the final 20 km into Shimla.

7

Kasol

Parvati Valley · Trekking · Backpacker

Distance

~280 km

Drive time

~6 hrs

Best season

May–June, Sept–Oct

Sedan one-way

₹9,000–10,000

Kasol is a stretch rather than a single destination — a small village in the Parvati Valley that has become the base camp for one of North India's most popular trekking circuits. The Kheerganga trek (12 km return) ends at hot springs at 2,950 m. The Manikaran Gurudwara, 5 km from Kasol, has natural hot springs you can bathe in.

Kasol village itself is a 500-metre strip of cafes, guesthouses, and trekking shops. The Israeli-influenced food scene is genuinely good: hummus, shakshuka, and fresh bread alongside pahadi dal. Chalal village (a 20-minute walk from Kasol) is quieter and more scenic.

At 280 km from Chandigarh, Kasol is best as a two-night trip minimum. Leave Saturday dawn, reach Kasol by early afternoon, trek Kheerganga on Sunday, drive back Monday. Booking an SUV is strongly recommended — the Bhuntar–Kasol road is narrow with river bends. Avoid July–August due to landslide risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which weekend getaway from Chandigarh is best for families with kids?

Pinjore Gardens (25 km) is ideal for young children — large manicured lawns, fountains, and a heritage motor museum nearby. Kasauli (60 km) is also excellent for families: safe walking paths through pine forests, Christ Church, and calm residential roads with no heavy traffic. Both are done comfortably in a half-day.

Can I do a day trip to Shimla from Chandigarh and return the same day?

Yes — and it's manageable. Leave Chandigarh by 7 AM, reach Shimla by 10:30–11 AM, spend 5–6 hours on Mall Road, Jakhu Temple, and Ridge, then depart Shimla by 5 PM and reach Chandigarh by 8–8:30 PM. The drive is 115 km (3.5 hrs) each way. Book an SUV for comfort on the Shimla approach road.

Which places near Chandigarh are good to visit in December?

December is lovely for Kasauli (crisp, clear, light snowfall possible), Nalagarh Fort (heritage stay in winter), and Morni Hills (cold but scenic). Shimla is beautiful in December with early snowfall — great if you want snow without going to Manali. Kasol and Manali are possible but require good preparation and SUV booking.

What is the cheapest weekend getaway from Chandigarh by taxi?

Parwanoo at ~35 km is the cheapest — Sedan fare from Chandigarh is around ₹1,200–1,500 one-way. Pinjore Gardens at 25 km is cheaper still (₹900–1,200), but there's less to do there for a full weekend. Parwanoo with the Timber Trail ropeway and apple orchards gives the most value at the lowest fare.
