Chandigarh to Manali by Taxi: Fare, Route, Stops & Time (2026)

The Chandigarh–Manali road trip is one of North India's great drives — 280 km of highway, river, and mountain that ends at one of the most sought-after hill destinations in the country. Here's everything you need to plan it properly.

Route Overview

The standard route from Chandigarh to Manali runs via NH-21, passing through Kiratpur Sahib, Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi, Aut, and Kullu before the final approach into Manali. Total distance is approximately 280 km; driving time is 6–7 hours including one or two short breaks.

There is no meaningfully shorter route. The Rohtang route is only relevant if you're continuing to Lahaul-Spiti beyond Manali. For most visitors, NH-21 is the route.

Best Stops Along the Way

You don't have to stop at all of these — but knowing what's at each point helps you plan breaks around what interests you.

Kiratpur Sahib (~50 km)

Fuel + chai

The first natural break after Chandigarh. Fill up the tank here — fuel stations become less frequent in the hills. The Gurudwara at Kiratpur Sahib offers langar (community meal) if you want an early breakfast. The road climbs noticeably after this.

Bilaspur (~90 km)

Breakfast stop

Bilaspur is the best breakfast town on the route. Several dhabas and restaurants open from 7 AM serve parathas, chai, and omelettes. After eating, the detour to the Daingiri Mata Mandir viewpoint of Gobind Sagar Lake takes just 10 minutes and is worth it — the lake stretches wide and blue against the Shivalik hills.

Mandi (~155 km)

Lunch stop

Mandi is the midpoint and the best lunch option. It sits on the Beas River, has good road-side restaurants, and is known locally as "Chota Kashi" for its 81 ancient temples. Take 20 minutes to walk along the river ghats if time allows. After Mandi the road quality improves as you head into the Kullu Valley.

Aut Tunnel (~175 km)

Photo stop

The 3-km Aut Tunnel replaced 30 km of dangerous switchback road and cut the Chandigarh–Manali time by over an hour. Once you emerge on the Kullu side, pull over for a view of the Beas River gorge. You've crossed into the high Kullu Valley at this point. Network can drop here — download your maps before this point.

Kullu (~220 km)

Optional stop

Kullu is the valley town famous for its shawl markets and whitewater rafting on the Beas. If you're buying Kullu shawls or Himachali caps, Bhuttico or the riverside market is your stop. River rafting bookings can be made here for next-day activity. Most travellers skip Kullu and push straight to Manali, but it's worth 30 minutes if it's your first Himachal trip.

Best Season to Travel Chandigarh to Manali by Taxi

March – June

Best

The classic tourist season. Snow begins melting in March; by April the Kullu Valley is lush green. May and June see the most visitors — Solang Valley still has snow, Rohtang Pass opens around mid-May. Book hotels and taxis 4–6 weeks ahead for the May–June peak. Leave by 6 AM to beat the Aut tunnel jams that form after 11 AM in May.

July – August

Avoid if possible

Monsoon season brings heavy rainfall. Landslides and road washouts are possible, particularly between Aut and Kullu. The drive can be delayed by hours or blocked entirely. If you must travel in July–August, check BRO (Border Roads Organisation) road status the morning of travel, and choose an SUV.

September – October

Recommended

Our favourite season for the Chandigarh–Manali run. Monsoon withdraws by mid-September, skies are clear, the Beas runs full and dramatic, and Rohtang is accessible until mid-October before closure. Fewer crowds than June, same scenery. Book 3–4 weeks ahead — the trekking season pulls good volume.

November – February

Winter / Snow

Manali town is open and beautiful under snow, and Solang Valley becomes a ski resort. Rohtang Pass is closed from November. The NH-21 into Manali stays passable through winter with occasional brief closures after heavy snowfall. Book an SUV — we carry chains above Kullu. January and February are very cold (−5°C to 5°C in Manali) but the snowscapes are spectacular.

Tips for the Road

  • 1

    Leave by 6 AM

The Aut Tunnel and the stretch from Kullu to Manali develops a one-way traffic system from 10 AM in peak season. Departing at or before 6 AM means you clear the bottleneck before the system kicks in, saving up to 90 minutes.

  • 2

Book an SUV for hills, families, and winter

The Innova Crysta and Ertiga handle mountain roads comfortably with luggage for four to six passengers. A Sedan works fine in good weather, but on hairpin bends with heavy bags, the extra width of an SUV makes the experience significantly more comfortable.

  • 3

    Download offline maps before Aut

Mobile data gets patchy between the Aut Tunnel and Manali. Google Maps offline works well — download the Himachal Pradesh region the night before. Also save your hotel address as a pinned location.

  • 4

    Pack layers even in summer

Chandigarh in May is 38°C; Manali at 2,050 m is 20°C in the day and 10°C at night. Even on a June trip, carry a light fleece or jacket. If you're going to Rohtang (3,980 m), add a proper winter layer regardless of the month.

  • 5

Book your hotel before your taxi

Manali's 150+ hotels fill up in May–June. Fix your accommodation before worrying about transport — a confirmed taxi is useless if you arrive with nowhere to stay.

  • 6

    Carry cash from Chandigarh

ATMs in Kullu and Manali work, but the machines between Bilaspur and Mandi are unreliable. Carry enough rupees for fuel stops, dhabas, and activity deposits. Digital payments (UPI) are accepted at most Manali restaurants and hotels.
